Approach to flooding in Peize and Roderwolde
Why is there flooding in Peize?
When there is a lot of rain, the water in Peize cannot drain properly. This is due to:
- The soil consists of clay. It allows little water to pass through.
- The groundwater is rising temporarily.
- There are many streets and buildings in the village. This prevents water from draining away properly.
- There is insufficient space for the water to be collected.
Does the De Onlanden nature reserve have an impact on Peize?
No. The higher water level in De Onlanden does not affect Peize. This is because:
- The distance between the village and the nature reserve.
- Elevation differences in the area; Peize is higher than De Onlanden.
- The way in which the water is drained.
However, measures are being taken in rural areas, such as at De Bommelier and Moleneind. This will prevent flooding around homes.
What measures will be taken in Peize?
The municipality of Noordenveld and the Noorderzijlvest water board are working together on solutions. They are taking the following measures:
- Locks and waterways are being deepened.
- Drainage will be installed (pipes in the ground that drain water).
- Drainage pipes (water culverts under roads) are being improved.
- Water is better connected to the main water system.
What is changing in Roderwolde?
The optimization of De Onlanden will cause a temporary rise in water levels:
- In De Onlanden up to NAP +0.18 meters.
- The water level in the Peizerdiep is rising.
- Around Roderwolde and Foxwolde, the water level may rise to NAP +0.24 meters.
In some places, this can cause high water levels. Measures have been agreed with residents to prevent flooding.
