Expansion of water storage facility De Onlanden

De Onlanden is a nature reserve with plenty of space for water. And that is important. Because when it rains heavily, water can be collected here. We call this water storage. This ensures that residents in the area are affected as little as possible by the water. Due to climate change, we expect more frequent and heavier rainfall. Therefore, extra space for water is needed.

De Onlanden water storage facility in brief

In De Onlanden, water is already collected when there is heavy rainfall. Because climate change is causing more frequent heavy rainfall, the water storage capacity is being increased from 7.5 to 12.7 million cubic meters. This is being done within the existing quays. Part of the work will be completed by early 2026, with all work finished by 2027. It is expected that all the extra space will be needed once every 25 years. Once every 10 years, part of it will be enough. We will then temporarily store the water in the water storage facility, after which it will slowly be discharged into the sea.
