Expansion of balancing lake De Onlanden
De Onlanden is a nature reserve with plenty of room for water. And that is important. Because when it rains a lot, it is possible to collect water here. We call this a balancing lake. This ensures that residents in the area suffer as little nuisance from the water as possible. Due to climate change, we expect more frequent and heavier rainfall. Therefore, we need extra space for water.

De Onlanden balancing lake in brief
In De Onlanden, water is already collected when there is heavy rainfall. Because climate change is causing more frequent heavy rainfall, the balancing lake is being enlarged from 7.5 to 12.7 million cubic meters. This is being done within the existing quays. Part of the work will be completed by early 2026, with all work scheduled for completion in 2027. All the extra space is expected to be needed once every 25 years. Once every 10 years, part of the space will be sufficient. We will then store the water temporarily in the balancing lake, after which it will be discharged slowly into the sea.
