Build weirs

In the coming months, we will be working with contractor Oosterhuis to build two new weirs at Hooiweg and modify the Doolhof weir.

  • The new weirs will be called Vischlust weir (northern weir) and Rowolder weir (southern weir). Under normal circumstances, the weirs lie flat, allowing the water to flow freely. When the expanded balancing lake is used, these weirs go up to retain water. The plan is for work on the weirs to be so far advanced in the first half of 2026 that we will be able to operate the northern weir manually and close off the southern channel. The balancing lake will be partially operational at that point, should this be necessary.
  • The existing Doolhof weir will be raised and fitted with a new gate. The embankments on either side of the weir will also be raised.

Could you notice the work?

  • Repair work on Matsloot pavement – road closure from 12 to 16 January (weather permitting)
The pavement at the northern weir subsided. To prevent damage to the bridge, we will be repairing it in early January. This will involve closing Matsloot/Hooiweg from the Sandebuur/Matsloot/Hooiweg intersection. The closure does not apply to cyclists.
  • The reinforcing steel and concrete floor at the northern weir is now complete; next up are the walls and a 6-metre-wide sluice gate.
  • The contractor takes nature into account during the work (breeding season, animal safety, and other measures). Ecologists from the water authority are involved in the work. Read the ecological work protocol here.

Transport routes during work

Peat will be removed and sand brought in for the two new weirs. Soil will also be needed to raise flood embankments at the Doolfhof weir. In addition, equipment will be transported to the construction site.
The map below shows the transport routes. Lorries will travel via Hooiweg/Matsloot (the red line) carrying materials for the construction of the weirs. Soil transport will follow the path along Cosun and the Roderwolder dyke (purple line). During the work on the weirs, public roads will remain open to other traffic. However, traffic may experience some disruption due to the freight traffic.

Earthworks

In collaboration with contractor Van der Meer, we are beginning the earthworks. Preparatory mowing and pruning work is already underway. This has cleared the site and made it accessible for the start of the earthworks. In the coming period, soil will be delivered and temporarily stored in various depots. More information about the earthworks will follow in the coming weeks.
