Closure of Delfzijl dike passages at 2 p.m. due to high water levels

On Thursday, December 21, we will be dealing with high tide at sea. Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works) is predicting a water level of NAP +3.50 meters around 7 p.m. That is why we will be closing the dike passages (coupures) in Delfzijl.

We will start closing the harbor at 2 p.m. This will result in the temporary closure of the port of Delfzijl. Traffic will be diverted using signs. Once the water has receded sufficiently and the road is clear of water and debris, the roads will be reopened. This is likely to happen sometime on Friday.

The dike passages in Delfzijl always close when the expected sea level is NAP +3 meters or higher. The water level of NAP +3 meters is expected around 5 p.m. The protocol is to close the dike passages three hours in advance. We carry out the closure together with our colleagues from the Hunze en Aa’s Water Authority.

Possible dike surveillance

We are awaiting the next forecasts from Rijkswaterstaat and will then decide whether we will also carry out dike monitoring. High tide is expected again tomorrow morning around 6 a.m. Noorderzijlvest monitors the sea dike from Lauwersoog to Delfzijl at a water level of NAP +3.80 meters.
