Additional credit of €3.8 million for Westerkwartier wastewater treatment plant
On the evening of Wednesday, March 27, the Board of Directors an additional loan of €3.8 million for the realisation the new wastewater treatment plant in Gaarkeuken.
Seizing opportunities
The additional funding is in addition to the nearly €60 million in funding previously allocated for the construction of the new treatment plant and the installation of 20 kilometre new pressure pipes.
With the additional funding, realises water authority realises water authority new initiatives:
First, a so-called belt thickener will be installed. The treatment process produces a certain amount of sludge. The belt thickener reduces the amount of sludge. The sludge is ultimately disposed of. The belt thickener lowers transportation costs. It also reduces the number of vehicle trips to and from the treatment facility: by 650 times.
Second, three adjacent households will be directly connected to the new wastewater treatment plant. These households currently use a so-called IBA (individual wastewater treatment system) on their property. With this intervention, that will soon be a thing of the past.
Finally, the additional funding is needed to cover increased indexation costs.
One new purification
The existing wastewater treatment plants in Marum, Zuidhorn, and Gaarkeuken will be consolidated into a single new, modern treatment facility at the site of the current Gaarkeuken plant. The facilities in Marum and Zuidhorn will be demolished. Construction of the new pressure pipelines from both old sites to Gaarkeuken has been in full swing since the fall of 2024. The new pressure pipelines and the treatment plant are scheduled to become operational in 2025.
