Additional credit of €3.8 million for Westerkwartier wastewater treatment plant

On Wednesday evening, March 27, the general board approved an additional credit of €3.8 million for the construction of the new sewage treatment plant (STP) in Gaarkeuken.

Capitalize on opportunities

The additional credit is in addition to the previously granted implementation credit of nearly €60 million for the construction of the new treatment plant and the installation of 20 kilometers of new pressure pipes.

With the additional funds, the water board is realizing two additional opportunities:
First, a so-called belt thickener will be deployed. The purification process produces a quantity of sludge. The belt thickener reduces the amount of sludge. Sludge is ultimately disposed of. The belt thickener reduces transport costs. It also reduces the number of traffic movements to and from the purification location: 650 times less often.
Secondly, three adjacent households will be directly connected to the new wastewater treatment plant. These households currently still use a so-called IBA (individual wastewater treatment) on their property. With this intervention, that will soon be a thing of the past.
Finally, the additional credit is needed to cover increased indexation costs.

One new purification

The existing treatment plants in Marum, Zuidhorn, and Gaarkeuken will be merged into a single new modern treatment plant at the site of the current Gaarkeuken treatment plant. The sites in Marum and Zuidhorn will be demolished. The construction of the new pressure pipes from both old sites to Gaarkeuken has been in full swing since the fall of 2024. The new pressure pipes and treatment plant are expected to be operational in 2025.
