Gas extraction in Groningen causes earthquakes. When we make plans to reinforce some parts of dykes or flood embankments, we make sure they can withstand earthquakes.

We conduct additional inspections following earthquakes measuring 3 or higher on the Richter scale. We investigate whether the earthquake caused cracks in dykes or flood embankments. We also check for damage to pumping stations, locks, or bridges that are the responsibility of the water authority. Not all damage is visible. That is why we conduct ongoing follow-up investigations to identify any invisible damage to pumping stations, locks, and pressure pipes (which transport large quantities of wastewater underground).

Sensors have been installed at a few locations in the sea dyke in the Eems canal flood embankment. These are used to measure vibrations in the dyke.
