Gas extraction in Groningen causes earthquakes. If we have to make plans to reinforce some (parts of) dikes and quays, we will ensure that they can withstand earthquakes.

We carry out additional inspections following earthquakes measuring 3 or higher on the Richter scale. We then investigate whether the earthquake has caused cracks in dikes or quays. We also check for damage to pumping stations, locks, or bridges that are (still) the responsibility of the water authority. Not all damage is visible. That is why we conduct ongoing follow-up investigations to identify any invisible damage to pumping stations, locks, and pressure pipes (which transport large quantities of wastewater underground).

Sensors have been installed at a few locations in the sea dike and in the Eemskanaalkade. These are used to measure vibrations in the dike.
