General Board meets on September 25
On September 25, the general board will meet at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the following topics:
- A new waterbed quality map
- Establishing policy on international cooperation
A new waterbed quality map
Since 2014, our water board and the Hunze & Aa’s water board have been working with a joint waterbed quality map. This map is frequently used as an environmental hygiene statement for dredged material in all our dredging projects and activities. The waterbed quality map must be updated periodically based on new data. It has now been 10 years since our first waterbed quality map was officially adopted. In order to continue working with the waterbed quality map, Antea was commissioned by the Noorderzijlvest and Hunze & Aa’s water boards to conduct further research into the environmental quality of dredged material in our waterways in rural areas in 2022 and 2023. In addition, Antea also investigated the need for the province of Groningen to use its own waterbed quality map for dredging and the roadside ditches along provincial roads. These studies showed that the quality of the dredged material in our rural waterways corresponds with the findings of previous studies. The dredged material from rural waterways (with the exception of the suspected locations known to us) in the working area meets the 'spreadability criterion'. This means that dredged material in rural areas can almost always be deposited on the banks. On Wednesday evening, the general board will decide on the new waterbed quality map. If approved, this map will be adopted and older maps will be withdrawn.
Establishing policy on international cooperation
Water authorities face major challenges: sustainable water management is key, and climate change and water availability play a major role. International cooperation is particularly valuable in this regard. The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority wants to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, partly by exchanging knowledge and experience with international partners. International cooperation strengthens the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority's process of growing into a future-proof organization. Through international cooperation, employees are actively given the opportunity to develop further, both professionally and in terms of their role in the world. As a water authority, we encourage curiosity about others and the world around us. The general board will decide on Wednesday evening on the adoption of the international cooperation policy for 2024–2030.
