The De Dijken-Bakkerom water storage is filling up fast
This afternoon, the De Dykes flood retention area was used for the first time to combat flooding, particularly in the Westerkwartier region.
Quick drainage of excess water
Heavy rainfall over a short period of time can lead to flooding. This was particularly the case in the Westerkwartier region starting Sunday afternoon and evening. A millimetre of 40 millimetre . Over the weekend and this Monday, we are unable to discharge water into the sea. The water level there is currently too high for that. We will be able to do so again on Tuesday morning and Tuesday evening. We expect water levels to gradually return to normal after Tuesday.
To help lower water levels further, particularly in the Westerkwartier region, the De Dykes water storage area was put into use for the first time this afternoon. At 3:00 p.m., excess water was released into the area at pumping station Dykes pumping station . The photos show that the area is filling up quickly. Within an hour, a large portion of it had already been flooded.
