The De Dijken-Bakkerom storage facility is filling up fast

This afternoon, the De Dijken-Bakkerom water storage area was used for the first time to combat high water levels, particularly in the Westerkwartier region.

Rapid intake of excess water

When a lot of rain falls in a short period of time, flooding can occur. This was particularly the case in the Westerkwartier region from Sunday afternoon and evening onwards. Forty millimeters of rain fell. The water board received many reports of local flooding. With weirs being lowered and pumping stations running at full capacity, we are trying to drain off the excess water.

We are unable to discharge water into the sea during the weekend and on Monday. The water level is currently too high for this. However, it will be possible again on Tuesday morning and Tuesday evening. We expect the water levels to slowly return to normal after Tuesday.

To help lower the water level in the Westerkwartier in particular, the De Dijken-Bakkerom water storage area was used for the first time this afternoon. At 3 p.m., the excess water was let in at the De Dijken pumping station. The photos show that the area is filling up quickly. Within an hour, a large part of it was already under water.

This afternoon, excess water will be released into the storage area at the De Dijken pumping station for the first time.
The water intake started at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.
