Protection against digging damage caused by beavers
Beavers live in the area around the Hoornsedijk. These animals are valuable to nature, but their digging can pose risks to dykes.
Protecting dykes from beaver damage
Beavers sometimes dig long tunnels below the waterline. This can compromise the stability of a dyke. That is why we are installing beaver meash at this site. This enables us to protect the dyke while allowing beavers to continue living in the area.
Tree felling and compensation
Where necessary, trees will be felled down to install the mesh. A compensation plan will be drawn up for this purpose, in consultation with Groningen Council, the Groningen provincial executive, and the Meerschap.
Why we prefer to keep dykes free of trees
As water authority, we prefer to keep flood embankments and dykes free of trees. Trees can compromise the stability of a dyke with their roots.
