Fact sheet 'Implementation incentive for soil and water quality'

For farmers and horticulturalists, investing in measures to improve soil and water quality is costly and not immediately profitable. By participating in the subsidy scheme, farmers and horticulturalists have been able to use the subsidy contribution to take measures. These measures improve soil and water quality and contribute to a sustainable future for us all.

Joint initiative

The project is a joint initiative of the Noorderzijlvest water board, the province of Groningen, and LTO Noord. For farmers and horticulturalists, investing in measures to improve soil and water quality is costly and not immediately profitable. The project stimulates and encourages farmers and horticulturalists to invest in sustainable measures by providing them with financial support.

Positive results

Tjeerd Hoekstra, project leader at LTO Noord, is positive about the results of the project: "The results show that farmers and horticulturalists are willing to invest heavily in making their businesses future-proof. However, finding the necessary finances can be a challenge. Subsidies offer a solution here and contribute to feasibility."

160 sustainable measures

The investments have led to the implementation of 160 sustainable measures. The greatest interest was in precision fertilization. This was followed by the combination of a hoe and weed remover and a strip tiller in combination with a seed drill. Dairy farmers also invested heavily in collection facilities for press juices. A clear summary of these measures is available in the LTO Noord fact sheet.

Delta Plan for Agricultural Water Management

The subsidy scheme 'Implementation incentive for soil and water quality' is part of the Delta Plan for Agricultural Water Management (DAW). The DAW is working on water challenges in agricultural areas. Among other things, the DAW does this by encouraging knowledge sharing through projects and cooperation between water boards and farmers.

Clean and healthy water

Agriculture and clean water are inseparable. Many farmers are already working hard to ensure cleaner water. There are important regulations for the agricultural sector.
