The first water expedition of 2026!
Discover the value of water on a journey of discovery through the water treatment of the future. On Wednesday evening 13 May, from 19:30–21:00 (doors open at 19:15), Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is hosting a fascinating water expedition at community centre Dorpshuis de Til in Leek. We warmly invite you to join us.
What can you expect?
We’ll start with a visual tour that highlights the value of water. After the film, we’ll take you through the water treatment process at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Garmerwolde. This will give you an idea of what a water treatment plant, such as the one in Leek, looks like. Afterwards, there will be time to ask questions at four themed stations. Our colleagues will tell you more about the water treatment process and the raw materials we extract from wastewater. We’ll also take you through the water cycle prior to treatment and discuss the future of water treatment. In short, an interactive and inspiring evening!

Reason for the water expedition
Freshwater is scarce: only 0.25% of all the water on Earth is available as freshwater for daily use. Noorderzijlvest Water Authority works daily from 13 sites to provide clean, healthy, and treated water for approximately 500,000 residents in the northern Netherlands. Yet harmful substances still end up in our water, posing a risk to the environment and public health. That is why using water responsibly is essential. Together with councils, drinking water companies, and knowledge partners, we are seeking smart and sustainable solutions. Part of the solution lies with all of us—in our behaviour and our choices. What we don’t flush down the drain, we don’t have to remove.
