De Onlanden: seeking more space for water and nature conservation
In the De Onlanden area, balancing lake nature and balancing lake are important. When there is heavy rainfall, we can collect water here. This ensures that residents in the surrounding area are affected as little as possible. As the climate changes, we expect more frequent and heavier rainfall. Therefore, we need to create additional space for water.
Which areas
In parts of De Onlanden, the natural environment is vulnerable to flooding. We are looking for a good solution that creates more space to temporarily store water—and allows nature to continue to thrive. In the coming period, we will be identifying locations where water storage is possible. We are investigating locations in and around De Onlanden. For example, in the Peizerdiep system, from downstream all the way to the Fochteloërveen. We will spare the vulnerable parts of De Onlanden as much as possible.
Research
First, a study is needed. Where can we collect water if necessary? What are the implications? And what will the costs be? The site managers, the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen, and the councils and Tynaarlo are also involved in the discussions. Once the study is complete, decisions can be made. The local community will also be consulted in this process. Implementation will follow.
