The Onlanden: seeking more space for water and nature conservation
Nature and water storage are both important in the De Onlanden area. When there is heavy rainfall, we can collect water here. This minimizes the inconvenience for local residents. Due to climate change, we expect more frequent and heavier rainfall. Therefore, additional space for water storage is needed.
Which areas
In parts of De Onlanden, nature is vulnerable to flooding. We are looking for a good solution that will create more space to temporarily collect water and allow nature to continue to develop. In the coming period, we will be looking at locations where water collection is possible. We are investigating locations in and around De Onlanden. For example, in the Peizerdiep system, from downstream to the Fochteloërveen. We are preserving the vulnerable parts of De Onlanden as much as possible.
Research
First, research is needed. Where can we collect water if necessary? What are the consequences? And what will the costs be? The site managers, the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen, and the municipalities of Noordenveld and Tynaarlo are also involved in the discussions. Once the research has been completed, decisions can be made. The surrounding area will also be involved in this process. Then it will be time for implementation.
