Part of old wastewater treatment plant transferred to new Gaarkeuken treatment plant
We have made great strides toward the new wastewater treatment plant in Gaarkeuken! At the end of April, a significant part of the old wastewater treatment plant was transferred to the new one.
Good preparations
The transferred was prepared in detail with contractors ADS and Strukton and Westerkwartier Council.
On the morning of 29 April, we temporarily shut down the sewage pumping stations in Niekerk, Grootegast, and Grijpskerk. This meant that no more sewage flowed through the pipes. Residents could continue to flush their toilets as usual, because we collected the water temporarily in the pipes. This meant the new pipes had to be connected to the new treatment plant within eight hours. And we managed it!
Another exciting moment was the transfer of the 'active sludge'. These are bacteria that clean up dirty substances in the sewage. These bacteria were successfully transferred from the old system to the new one.
Pipe from Marum follows
The new treatment plant is now in use for sewage from Niekerk, Grootegast, and Grijpskerk. The pipeline from Zuidhorn has also been connected, and the one from Marum will follow shortly. By the end of this year, all pipelines will be fully operational.
