Midden-Westerkwartier area process gets underway
In early 2026, the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority will start an area process in the Midden-Westerkwartier. This area is located around Grootegast, Sebaldeburen, Niekerk, and Oldekerk. Together with residents and other parties, we want to draw up a plan for a future-proof water system for the polders. To prepare for this properly, the water authority will start measuring weirs, culverts, and other waterworks in December.

What are we going to do?
We are working with residents and relevant organizations and parties to draw up a water management plan. This plan sets out how we can ensure the water system continues to function effectively in the future. Together, we are looking at challenges, bottlenecks, and possible solutions.
Preparation begins in December
Starting next week, surveyors will begin measuring weirs, culverts, and other structures in the area. This information will assist in the development of the plan.

Why is this important?
The area process revolves around cooperation. The water board wants to draw up a plan for a future-proof water system that is widely supported by the local community. The water area plan will tell us what measures are needed and when we will implement them. We can also use this plan to make new water level decisions.
Want to contribute your ideas?
In the first half of 2026, local residents and other stakeholders will receive an invitation to a walk-in meeting about the area process.
