Midden-Westerkwartier area process gets underway

In early 2026, Noorderzijlvest Water Authority started an area process in the Midden-Westerkwartier. This area is located around Grootegast, Sebaldeburen, Niekerk, and Oldekerk. Together with residents and other stakeholders, we aim to develop a plan for a future-proof water management system for the polders. To prepare for this properly, the water authority will begin surveying weirs, culverts, and other water structures in December.

What are we going to do?

Together with residents and involved organisations and parties, we're creating a water area plan. This plan outlines how we can ensure the water system works well in the future. Together, we'll look at challenges, bottlenecks, and possible solutions.

Preparation begins in December

Starting next week, surveyors will begin measuring weirs, culverts, and other structures in the area. This information will assist in the preparation of the plan.

Why does it matter?

The area process is all about cooperation. The water authority wants to draw up a plan for a future-proof water system that is widely supported by the local community. The water area plan will tell us what measures are needed and when we will implement them. We can also use this plan to take new water level regulation decisions.

Want to contribute your ideas?

In the first half of 2026, local residents and other stakeholders will receive an invitation to a walk-in meeting about the area process.
