Hunsingo pumping station name new pumping station Zoutkamp

Gemaal Hunsingo has been chosen as the name for the new pumping station to be built behind the historic Hunsingo lock in Zoutkamp. The choice of this name is the result of a vote that took place at the end of last year. Residents of Zoutkamp and the surrounding area were able to vote for one of three proposed names. In addition to Gemaal Hunsingo, Gemaal De Soltcamp and Gemaal Achter Diek were also in the running.

With 191 of the 361 votes, the name Gemaal Hunsingo proved to be the favorite. More than half of the voters cast their vote for this name. With 108 votes, Gemaal De Soltcamp finished in second place with just under 30% of the votes. Gemaal Achter Diek came in third with 62 votes, or just over 17% of the votes.

Hunsingo pumping station

The chosen name refers to the location of the new pumping station. It is located where the Hunsingo Canal flows into the Lauwersmeer. This ensures that the connection is also reflected in the name. Hunsingo was one of the three Ommelanden (districts) of Groningen. It is precisely this area that will be drained by the new pumping station in the future. The Hunsingo Water Board was one of the legal predecessors of the Noorderzijlvest Water Board. With the name 'Hunsingo' pumping station, this name is making a comeback in the water board's operations. In addition, the pumping station and lock have the same name as many pumping station and lock complexes of the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority. Similar names can be found at Abelstok, Den Deel, Tilburg, and Usquert. The current Hunsingo lock will retain its name, and the pumping station will be named accordingly.

Water safety

The construction of the new pumping station behind the historic Hunsingo lock is part of the 'New Waterworks Zoutkamp' project. This pumping station has a larger capacity and replaces the current H.D. Louwes pumping station. The new pumping station will be commissioned in 2025. In this way, we are compensating for the negative effects of climate change and guaranteeing water safety.
