Pumps running at full capacity to drain water after severe weather

In the northwest of our working area, more than 90 mm of rain fell within an hour this evening due to very heavy rainfall. The HD Louwes and De Waterwolf pumping stations are operating at full capacity to discharge the excess water via Lauwersmeer lake to the sea.

Cloudburst

More than 90 mm of rain fell within an hour around Leens and Ulrum. This is twice the average amount of precipitation that normally falls in this region during the entire month of May. The towns of Zoutkamp and Lauwersoog also had to cope with similar amounts of water within a short period of time. This led to flooded streets and very wet fields.

Measures

The water board is working hard to pump away the excess water. The weirs are lowered and the HD Louwes pumping stations and De Waterwolf pumping station are operating at full capacity. All measures are aimed at maximizing water drainage.
