Joint recommendation: do not approve the Wieringa gas field production plan

Missing information

They believe that the production plan lacks important information regarding the impact of gas production on subsidence, water management, nature, and infrastructure, for example. As a result, the effects of continuing production are not sufficiently clear. According to the regional authorities involved, this prevents the minister from making a well-informed decision regarding the production plan proposed by NAM.

A new assessment is necessary

The authorities also argue that NAM’s application is more than just an extension of an existing permit. They contend that new insights into the gas field and the development of production operations call for a new and comprehensive assessment of the impacts—and not merely approval of the extension of the production period.

The impact on residents must be taken into account 

In addition, the local authorities point out the ongoing impact that gas extraction has on residents. Many people are still dealing with damage repair, reinforcing their homes, and feelings of uncertainty on a daily basis. That is why they believe that decision-making should take account of technical safety risks and of quality of life, trust, and the perception of safety.

Additional justification required

The local authorities are asking the ministry to require NAM to conduct additional studies and provide further justification first. According to the regional authorities, a careful decision on the extraction plan can only be made at that time.

End gas production from small fields in Groningen as soon as possible 

Regardless, the joint administrative position of the Groningen authorities remains that gas extraction from the small fields in Groningen must be phased out as soon as possible. Groningen has borne the burden of gas extraction for decades, and this history continues to affect the lives of its residents every day. In addition, Groningen is committed to sustainable energy. 

Joint recommendation 

The recommendation was drafted jointly by the Groningen Provincial Executive, the Fryslân Provincial Executive, Westerkwartier Council, Noardeast-Fryslân Council, Noorderzijlvest, Water Authority, and Wetterskip Fryslân. It is a recommendation to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy regarding NAM’s request to continue gas production from the Wieringa gas field after 2026.
