Green Island sets course for its final resting place
The floating, nature-integrated island created for the “Our Water World” event is on its way to its final resting place. It left Zoutkamp this morning and is headed for Hoornse Meer, where it will arrive on Friday.
Three mirrors, three projects
The green island was created on behalf of Noorderzijlvest Water Authority . There were three mirrors on the island (see photo). Each mirror symbolized a major construction project that the “ water authority ” is completing this year.
These three projects were the focus of the “Our Water World” event. The event took place in June in Lauwersoog:
- The new, expanded wastewater treatment plant in Gaarkeuken
- The new " pumping station " Hunsingo and the Hunsingo Lock in Zoutkamp
- The Reinforcement of the Lauwersmeer Dike
The first trip was to “Our Water World”
In June, the island with mirrors took a trip through the “ region ” (The River of Memories) organized by Noorderzijlvest Water Authority to draw attention to this event. The island sailed past Gaarkeuken, downtown Groningen, the Reitdiep, and Zoutkamp.
The island also played a role during the event in Lauwersoog (“Our Water World” was a success! | Noorderzijlvest Water Authority). Afterward, the island was placed near the H.D. Louwes Pumping Station in Zoutkamp.
The final trip is to Hoornse Meer
Until today. This morning, the green island—without mirrors—began its final journey to Hoornse Meer.
