Water boards' equipment on its way to Ukraine water disaster

Following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine, the European Union and the Dutch government asked the 21 water authorities and the Dutch Rescue Brigade to provide material assistance. Last week, the water authorities gathered all available equipment. On Monday, June 12, the first transport of 15 trucks left for Ukraine. By Wednesday, around 50 trucks will have left for Ukraine.

Water boards offer emergency aid after water disaster in Ukraine

These first trucks contain boats, pumps, lifebuoys, life jackets, and waders, among other items. Later in the week, more convoys of trucks will leave the Netherlands for the disaster area.

Cooperation for emergency aid

A major logistical operation has collected all the equipment from the Netherlands over the past few days at a depot in Vriezenveen, Overijssel. From this location, trucks are transporting the equipment to the affected area under the direction of the national government. Water authority Stefan Kuks of the Vechtstromen water authority was present on behalf of the 21 Dutch water authorities at the departure of the transport. "As Dutch water managers, we are happy to contribute to the emergency relief efforts for this major humanitarian water disaster in Ukraine. We are doing this together with the Dutch Rescue Brigade. A huge logistical operation has been carried out over the past few days. Ideally, you want to act even faster to help people in need as quickly as possible. At the same time, I realize that this action has been organized incredibly quickly. Within a few days, heavy equipment has been collected from all over the Netherlands and is already being transported. Compliments to the people who have been working day and night on this over the past few days."
