Nature-friendly banks
In the Noorderzijlvest area of Groningen, 42 kilometres of nature-friendly banks have been constructed already. By the end of 2027, this figure is expected to reach almost 60 kilometres. By constructing nature-friendly banks, the water authority aims to improve water quality in the area and make it more attractive to amphibians, fish, and small creatures that live in and around the water.
What is a nature-friendly bank?
They are gently sloping banks where plants can grow. Many banks slope steeply, leaving little room for animals and plants. They need shallow water. The plants on the banks extract nutrients from the water, making it clearer. The bank plants also provide protection for fish and aquatic insects. They can hide among the plants on the shallow banks to mate or raise their young. These fish and small creatures are part of natural water and contribute to water quality.
How does it work?
The nature-friendly banks are constructed along the main watercourses of the water authority. We purchase part of the strips of land along the banks from the landowners, who are mostly farmers. Some farmers designing nature-friendly banks themselves. We work with the farmers to determine the best approach for their land and they receive compensation.
What are the benefits for farmers?
The farmers who participate in this project are really enthusiastic. They see that it has an impact on the diversity of flora and fauna at the edges of their land. They also see other benefits. Many farmers suffer from collapsing banks. This prevents them from cultivating the edges of their plots. The plants on the new, gently sloping banks hold the soil better. This means that the edges of the plots can be used more effectively again.
