New code of conduct for flora and fauna for management and maintenance by water boards
From April 1, 2025, the water boards in the Netherlands will once again have a code of conduct for flora and fauna. This code of conduct contains agreements for the management and maintenance of ditches, canals, and other waterways. The agreements in the code of conduct are intended to enable work to be carried out with as little damage to plants and animals as possible. For example, we pay attention to nesting birds during mowing and ensure that protected animals and plants are disturbed as little as possible. Thanks to this code of conduct, water authorities usually no longer need to apply for a separate permit from the province.
What does this mean for the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority?
The new agreements mean that we will have to work differently in some places. We will assess the best way to manage each location individually. We will use the coming year to explore how we can work with the new agreements. In doing so, we will consider the impact on the habitat of animals and plants, practical feasibility and safety, and the availability of people and machinery. We are also consulting with the provinces and, where necessary, making additional agreements with them.
Caring for nature and biodiversity
We always take nature into account in our work. We usually opt for a working method that preserves the habitat of animals and plants as much as possible. For example, we leave plants standing in some places during the winter. This is good for small animals and birds that hibernate. We take breeding birds and protected species into account. Working in accordance with the code of conduct also contributes to the preservation and improvement of biodiversity.
When do we mow?
From mid-April to the end of October, we mow the paths and banks along ditches and canals. This ensures that the water continues to flow properly. There are also new agreements regarding the use of flail mowing. This is a method of mowing in which grass and plants are finely chopped. Flail mowing is still permitted in some cases, for example when it is safer. In other places, we will use different methods of mowing.
Where do we do what?
We are still investigating the best approach for each area. However, we have already decided how we will manage a number of areas this year. The map (see image) shows where we are taking action. We will clarify this further in the course of the year, in collaboration with the province.
