New series “Mien Toentje”
What do you do when your neatly tiled back garden looks more like a swimming pool after a downpour? Starting Friday 22 May, RTV Noord will be diving into Groningen’s gardens with its new programme 'Mien Toentje' (My garden). In collaboration with the water authorities, the Groningen provincial executive, and Waterbedrijf Groningen, residents are inspired to tackle water management issues in their own gardens. Host Joyce and water expert Ruurd visit gardens with quirky owners and offer practical tips.
A peek behind the fence
In this series, we get a literal peek behind the fence at the homes of various Groningen residents facing water issues. A homeowner’s problem is never entirely isolated. After all, flooded patios or dry lawns tell a bigger story. These are the same climate and water challenges that are tackled by the provincial executive, the water company, and the water authorities across the region. With practical tips, garden owners, viewers, and Joyce learn how today’s major climate challenges can be scaled down to what happens in their own back gardens.
Meet Ruurd
To bridge the gap between theory and practice, Joyce is assisted by Ruurd. As a water expert, he is brought in to advise garden owners on how to tackle their gardens. With boots in the mud, armed with mini-excavators or infiltration crates, and a healthy dose of dry humour, Ruurd provides the participants with expert advice. He explains complex concepts, such as how a WADI (Water Drainage and Infiltration) works, in an extremely simple way. His motto on completing a successful garden project? “Cover it with sand!”
Greener gardens
The programme informs residents of Groningen of small, accessible changes they can make themselves in their gardens or neighbourhoods to deal with water-related challenges: from reducing the strain on the sewer system to combating heat stress in the middle of summer. Sustainable garden maintenance doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It’s an accessible invitation to all viewers to roll up their sleeves and get to work. This will make Groningen more beautiful and greener, and fully prepared for the climate of the future.
