Official start of renovation of Gaarkeuken wastewater treatment plant
On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, the water board will celebrate the official start of the construction and renovation of the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Gaarkeuken.
Multi-million investment
The work started a little earlier. Nevertheless, after years of preparation and planning, the water board wants to pause for a moment. Administrators, the contractor, and local residents will be present at the celebration.
In October, we already started laying new pressure pipes between Marum and Zuidhorn. These pipes will transport the wastewater to the renovated treatment plant in Gaarkeuken. Once the construction and renovation of Gaarkeuken is complete, these pipes can be connected.
The renovation of the treatment plant requires an investment of €27.3 million. The construction of the pressure pipes for transporting the wastewater to the new treatment plant will cost €28.5 million. Together with all the preparations and planning, the investment for securing treated water in the Westerkwartier amounts to almost €67 million.
One new treatment plant
The old sewage treatment plants in Marum, Zuidhorn, and Gaarkeuken are outdated. Therefore, a new treatment plant will be built in Gaarkeuken. Gaarkeuken will become the central treatment plant that will take over the functions of the other locations. The locations in Marum and Zuidhorn will eventually close.
New information center
In addition to the official start of construction and renovation, a new information center will also be opened at the Gaarkeuken site. This center is specifically for school classes and interested parties from the surrounding area. The center shows what the water board does and provides information about the construction and renovation work at the Gaarkeuken wastewater treatment plant. It also explains what is contained in sewage water.

Westerkwartier Wastewater Treatment Plant - a clean story
The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is constructing a new sewage treatment plant in Gaarkeuken. This will replace the old plants in Marum, Gaarkeuken, and Zuidhorn. Cleaner water, better for the environment, and less odor and noise in the surrounding area. All information about the project can be found on our website Home | RWZI Westerkwartier (noorderzijlvest.nl).
