Development prospects for the Novex area in Groningen
The national government has designated 16 areas where the spatial challenges facing public authorities are so large, complex, and interrelated that they require joint management by the national government and the region. The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is participating in the challenges within the Novex Area Groningen.
Joining forces
In order to tackle these challenges effectively, the national government and regional authorities are joining forces and working together on a regional basis. In all NOVEX areas (National Environmental Vision Extra), long-term cooperation is taking place through a joint development perspective, implementation agenda, and investment agenda.
In the NOVEX area of Groningen (now combined with the Seaports Master Plan into a single project), there is an accumulation of (large-scale) energy-related and economic developments, social challenges, land subsidence, climate challenges, and the effects of gas extraction. The national government, the province of Groningen, the municipalities of Groningen, Het Hogeland, Midden-Groningen, and Eemsdelta, and the Hunze en Aa's and Noorderzijlvest water boards have therefore joined forces to work together on the integrated development of this NOVEX area and then to implement and execute this in a joint, area-specific manner.
Development perspective
In June 2025, a development perspective was established and work can begin on implementation. For more information about the area and the development perspective, visit the website of the Province of Groningen: NOVEX - Province of Groningen NOVEX - Province of Groningen
