Open Day for residents on World Fish Migration Day

On May 25, Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is hosting an open house Noorderzijlvest Water Authority 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for residents and other interested parties, young and old alike. The event will take place at the R.J. Cleverings Locks and the port of Lauwersoog.

Importance of free-flowing rivers

The focus is on fish migration in our streams, rivers, and canals—a topic that is Noorderzijlvest Water Authority on the agenda at Noorderzijlvest Water Authority . The occasion is World Fish Migration Day, which will be celebrated for the fifth time on May 25. Events are being organized around the world on this day to raise awareness of the importance of free-flowing rivers for migratory fish.

Unique look inside the R.J. Clevering locks

The locks in Lauwersoog form the gateway to the northern Netherlands for fish coming in from the sea. Activities have been organized throughout the harbor. Visitors can take a unique look inside one of the immense discharge pipes under the R.J. Clevering locks.

In the photo with your favorite fish

Further along in the harbor, filmmaker Arthur de Bruin talks about his award-winning documentary "Nederland Onder Water" (The Netherlands Under Water). Participants can also look into the eyes of various types of migratory fish and have their picture taken with their favorite fish (life-size). Fish experts talk about the importance of Lauwersmeer as a nature reserve.

Boat trip

From the harbor in Lauwersoog, 't Ailand organizes boat excursions, during which plankton is fished in the Wadden Sea and Lauwersmeer.

Practical information

  • For young people, there is a special children's corner with fun activities.
  • You can get around the port on foot, by shuttle bus, or by boat.
  • Admission is free.

The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority open day is being organised in collaboration with a number of partners: Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences, Wageningen University, Sportvisserij  Nederland (Dutch Angling Association), Stichting Geïntegreerde Visserij (Waddenloods), World Heritage Centre, Vissen voor Verbinding (Fish for Connection), Ruim Baan voor Vissen (Make Way for Fish) 2, and the Wadden Fund.
