PFAS levels in swimming waters in the province of Groningen are low
The PFAS content in swimming waters in the province of Groningen is low. This is evident from checks that we recently carried out together with the Hunze en Aa's and Wetterskip Fryslân water boards. This means that enthusiasts can continue to swim safely in the designated swimming areas.
Samples taken from swimming water locations
Over the past few weeks, samples of bathing water have been taken at nine locations in the province of Groningen. These include Stadsstrand Groningen, Paterswoldsemeer, and Oldambtmeer. The samples were tested in the laboratory for PFAS and any health risks.
Well below RIVM guidelines
The results show that the concentration of PFAS at all the swimming locations investigated is well below the guidelines set by the RIVM. According to these guidelines, a maximum of 280 nanograms of PEQ (collective name for several types of PFAS) per liter is permitted in swimming water. The values found in Groningen ranged between 0 and 37 nanograms. This means there are no health risks for swimmers.
Clean and safe swimming water
The swimming season for swimming in swimming lakes runs from May 1 to October 1. The water boards and the province of Groningen are jointly responsible for the hygiene, safety, and water quality of swimming lakes. During the swimming season, the water boards check the swimming water weekly. They investigate whether the quality of the water meets the legal standards and guidelines. If the quality of the swimming water is insufficient, the province issues a negative swimming advisory.
