PFAS levels are low in swimming spots in the province of Groningen
PFAS levels in swimming waters in the province of Groningen are low. This is evident from tests we recently conducted in collaboration with the Hunze en Aa's and Wetterskip Fryslân water boards. This means that swimmers can continue to swim safely in the designated swimming areas.
Samples taken at swimming water locations
Over the past few weeks, samples of bathing water have been collected at nine locations in the province of Groningen. Among others, Groningen City Beach, Lake Paterswold, and Lake Oldambt were tested. The samples were analyzed in the laboratory for PFAS and potential health risks.
Well below RIVM guidelines
The results show that PFAS concentrations at all swimming locations tested are well below the RIVM guidelines. According to these guidelines, swimming water may litre a maximum of 280 nanograms litre PEQ (a collective term for several types of PFAS) per litre . The levels found in Groningen ranged from 0 to 37 nanograms. There are therefore no health risks for swimmers.
Clean and safe swimming water
The swimming season for swimming in natural swimming areas runs from May 1 through October 1. The water boards and the province of Groningen are jointly responsible for the hygiene, safety, and water quality of these areas. During the swimming season, the water boards test the swimming water weekly. They check whether the water quality meets legal standards and guidelines. If the quality of the swimming water is insufficient, the province issues a negative swimming advisory.
