Preliminary assessment of lake Leekstermeer
Lake Leekstermeer plays a vital role in collecting and draining water in the region. It is also a nature reserve with many species of birds, plants, and other animals. Lake Leekstermeer is also a popular destination for recreational users. We are working to improve water quality and strengthen the water system in the area. That is why we are launching a preliminary assessment.

What is the role of lake Leekstermeer?
Lake Leekstermeer is located on the border between Groningen and Drenthe and plays an important role in storing and draining water. Water flows into the lake from various watercourses, such as the Peizerdiep, the Lettelberterdiep, and the Leeksterhoofddiep. During high water levels and heavy runoff from Drenthe, lake Leekstermeer can function as a buffer. The water is then discharged to lake Lauwersmeer and ultimately released into the Wadden Sea.
Lake Leekstermeer is also a Natura 2000 site and part of the Dutch Nature Network (NNN). The lake is surrounded by a vast landscape of marshes, hayfields, and reed beds. The area is rich in bird species, plants, and other wildlife. With walking and cycling paths, open water, reed beds, and wet grasslands, it is a beloved spot for recreational visitors and nature lovers.
An important goal has been agreed for lake Leekstermeer: improving water quality. This fits in with the WFD objectives, which guide our work on clean and healthy surface water and groundwater. In addition to improving water quality, we want to assess what is needed to improve the entire water system in and around lake Leekstermeer. We are launching a preliminary assessment to investigate what measures are needed to ensure a clean and healthy lake Leekstermeer.
What does the preliminary assessment entail?
During the preliminary assessment, we identify the water-related challenges that may become part of a future project. We focus on defining the challenges and the scope of the project, as well as gathering relevant information about the area. The preliminary assessment is intended to identify these issues, not to make any decisions at this stage.

What is the result?
During the preliminary assessment, we gather the following information:
- An action plan for the further development of the lake Leekstermeer area.
- A clear overview of the spatial layout for the area.
- Tools for working with the community to address the challenges at hand.
