Primary barrier provides space for wind farm
Last Thursday, RWE officially opened the Oostpolderdijk Wind Farm together with Herman Beerda, executive board member of the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority, and Melissa van Hoorn, deputy for the province of Groningen.

This project demonstrates that there are opportunities to make better use of the more than 3,500 kilometers of primary flood defenses in the Netherlands to further advance the energy transition. Water safety is, of course, an important issue in this regard. That is why a great deal of attention was paid to the construction of the foundations of the wind turbines, which actually reinforce the dike. The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority showed courage in making a dike available for the project. Other water authorities and interested parties also showed interest in the way in which the project was realized in collaboration with the water authority.
About the Oostpolderdijk wind farm
In collaboration with the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority, RWE has realized the unique Oostpolderdijk Wind Farm in the province of Groningen. We have installed three wind turbines on a primary flood defense structure belonging to the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority in Eemshaven, which generate electricity and reinforce the sea dike. This is the first time in the world that such a project has been realized. The Oostpolderdijk Wind Farm has a total installed capacity of 7.5 MW.
