Renovation of Fanerpolder pumping station begins
On Friday, September 2, renovation work began on the Fanerpolder pumping station near Briltil. At the same time, work began on reinforcing the Hoendiep Westzijde quay and repairing the road on the quay. The official starting signal was given by the oldest and youngest residents of Hoendiep Westzijde, Mr. Mulder and Robert Jan Vennema. In their speeches, Herman Beerda, member of the water board's executive committee, and Bert Nederveen, alderman of the municipality of Westerkwartier, emphasized the importance of this work for water management and the residents of the area. Mr. Dijkstra spoke on behalf of the residents and expressed his gratitude for the pleasant cooperation.
Climate-ready, fish-friendly, and energy-efficient
During the renovation, the Fanerpolder pumping station will be equipped with two new pumps. This will enable the pumping station to pump 46 m3 per minute per pump from the Fanerpolder to the Hoendiep. This will allow the pumping station to effectively drain water during heavy rainfall. And with two pumps, a backup pump will always be available in the event of a malfunction. The new pumps are fish-friendly and energy-efficient. The water system in the Fanerpolder will already be climate-proof by 2021. With the new pumps, the pumping station will also be ready for the consequences of climate change.
Cultural-historical pumping station in the Fanerpolder
The pumping station building is a monument. It was built in 1926 in the Amsterdam School style. The building is very narrow. That made it a major challenge to install not one but two pumps while still preserving the building. The technical part will now be located underground. The exterior of the pumping station will be refurbished. Old details will be restored, such as the copper gutters and drain pipes. A clinker path will be laid around the building. Details from the pumping station will be reflected in the new wrought-iron fencing.
Transfer of pumping station from municipality to water board
The Fanerpolder pumping station and part of the Grotetocht behind the pumping station belonged to the municipality of Westerkwartier. The municipality transferred the pumping station and part of the Grotetocht to the water board. And paid the water board an adjustment contribution.
Reinforcement of Hoendiep Westzijde quay and road repairs
During construction, the Hoendiep road will be used much more frequently and heavily than normal. That is why the residents proposed to jointly modify the road. The quay under the Hoendiep Westzijde road is still sufficiently high, but this will probably no longer be the case in the future. That is why the water board is already reinforcing the quay on the Hoendiep Westzijde. The residents' association is contributing to the repair of the road. This will ensure that the road will be ready for use again for a long time to come. And the reinforcement of the quay will also protect the residents of the Fanerpolder against flooding in the future.
Implementation within the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier area development
This work is being carried out under the banner of the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier area development project. The province of Groningen and the Noorderzijlvest water board are working together with other parties and the local community to create new nature and water storage areas. Prolander is managing the project. Arcadis is responsible for management and supervision. And contractor De Boer en De Groot is carrying out the work.
