Restoration of Zuidema's Klap drawbridge
The water authority restored the Zuidema's Klap drawbridge near Niekerk (Leens). The restoration has been completed in the meantime. The bridge was reopened to road traffic on 23 July 2021.
Implementation phase
During the work, the bridge was closed. It was dismantled and transported to a workshop where it was repaired. After repair, the bridge was put back in place. Local traffic on Kanaalstraat and Aikemapad near Niekerk was diverted during the work period by means of signage.
History
The monumental drawbridge Zuidema's Klap is located at the junction of Kanaalstraat and Wester Aikemapad near Niekerk (Leens). The bridge spans the Hunsingo Canal. It was built in 1879 and is a national monument. There is an axle load restriction due to defects identified in a structural survey. The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority has made funds available to prepare for the restoration of the bridge in 2018 and then to carry out the restoration.
