Restoration of Zuidema's Klap drawbridge
The water authority restored the Zuidema's Klap drawbridge near Niekerk (Leens). The restoration has been completed in the meantime. The bridge was reopened to road traffic on 23 July 2021.
Implementation phase
During the work, the bridge was closed. It was dismantled and transported to a workshop where it was repaired. After the repair, the bridge was put back in place. Diversion signs were used to divert local traffic on Kanaalstraat and Aikemapad near Niekerk while the work was carried out.
History
The impressive Zuidema's Klap drawbridge is located at the junction of Kanaalstraat and Wester Aikemapad near Niekerk (Leens). The bridge spans the Hunsingo canal. It was built in 1879 and is a listed building. There is an axle load restriction due to defects identified in a structural survey. The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority has made funds available to prepare the restoration of the bridge in 2018 followed by the actual restoration.
