Restoration of old lock at De Goliath mill completed

With the opening of the sliding gate in the old drainage lock at the De Goliath polder mill near Eemshaven, the restoration of this water intake was officially finalised today. Cultural-historical heritage

The old lock at De Goliath Mill was built in 1878 following the creation of the Emmapolder. The lock itself is no longer an active part of the water system and has fallen into disrepair over the years. Given the water authority to preserving cultural and historical heritage, it was decided to restore the complex to its former glory. In addition to restoring the lock itself, the original wooden gates have been reinstalled. These had been replaced in the 1960s with a steel lift gate. Two sluice gate houses have also been installed.

Landscape programme

The restoration of this drainage sluice is part of the implementation of the landscape program. Grid operator TenneT is constructing a new 380-kilovolt overhead high-voltage power line between Eemshaven and Vierverlaten near Hoogkerk. The existing connexion is no longer sufficient due to Eemshaven’s growth as an energy hub. connexion the impact of this connexion , TenneT and the province are investing in landscape and nature conservation measures.

Financing

The water authority out the restoration in collaboration with the Foundation for the Management and Preservation of the De Goliath Polder Mill Complex, Oosterhof-Holman as the contractor, and the 380 kV Landscape Compensation Scheme (TenneT and the Province of Groningen). In addition to the water authority investment, TenneT and the Province of Groningen water authority also contributed financially to this restoration through this scheme.
