The Ulrum sewage treatment plant is currently not operational.

The main switch at our sewage treatment plant in Ulrum malfunctioned this morning. This means that there is no power at this treatment plant, located south of the village along the Hunsingo Canal. The treatment plant is currently not operational.

Wastewater collected by trucks

The water board has therefore initially shut down the sewage pumping stations in the immediate vicinity of this wastewater treatment plant. These pumping stations normally transport the wastewater to the wastewater treatment plant. We can buffer the wastewater at these pumping stations for a while. The water board is not taking any risks with regard to possible discharges of untreated wastewater into surface water. The pumping stations are now running again to transport the wastewater to the WWTP in Ulrum. Since this afternoon, the wastewater has been collected by trucks from there. This prevents any untreated wastewater from being discharged into surface water.
The wastewater is being transported to the wastewater treatment plant in Garmerwolde. We will continue to do so throughout the evening. There will be more transport movements from the Ulrum area to Garmerwolde today until the end of the evening and tomorrow during the day.

Time needed to replace switch; emergency power supply first

Temporarily discharging wastewater via the road gives the water board time to replace the defective main switch. Delivering and installing it takes time. The water board expects to be able to restart the treatment plant in Ulrum tomorrow using an emergency power supply. We expect the delivery and installation of a new main switch to take place at the end of this week.
