Mowing with purpose
At some streams, we leave part of the vegetation so that animals still have places to seek shelter. Flowers and herbs next to the stream are also good for the insects that live there. And the vegetation helps retain water for drier periods. Mowing is certainly not a straightforward job; we mow with purpose.
‘I enjoy working outdoors’
In winter, I have other tasks. I deal with machine maintenance. And in spring, there is a lot of pruning work. It's a varied job, although you do have to be a bit of a loner. Of course, you also have contact with colleagues from the workshop, or with the water level manager. There's time for a chat or a joke. But in my job, you have to enjoy doing your own thing.
Room for a private life
The water authority works with high-quality machinery. I think that's important. Here, you can work with high-quality equipment. We also take good care of it; it just has to look good.
We also work with a clear schedule, which is great. Before this, I worked for a contracting company in arable farming. I worked long hours there. Now that I've just become a father, I'm glad I chose the water authority. I like being with my family and having fixed working hours. The government offers more room for your private life.
Whether my son is interested in water? He just got a water slide with little locks. He's still very young, but I generally believe that people should be aware of water. As water managers, we try to ensure that we don't have too much water anywhere, nor too little. But ultimately, you have to make do with the water that's available.
