“I love the mowing season and enjoy sitting outside on the tractor. We mow the banks and bottoms of canals and ditches so that sufficient water can flow and the water can also be drained properly. This is important to prevent flooding or, conversely, drought.
The water board utilizes high-quality machinery, which I consider to be important.
Conscious mowing
At some streams, we leave part of the vegetation standing so that animals still have places to seek shelter. Flowers and herbs next to the stream are also good for the insects that live there. And the vegetation helps retain water for drier periods. Mowing is therefore certainly not a straightforward job; we mow consciously.
‘I enjoy working outdoors’
In winter, I have other tasks. I take care of machine maintenance. And in spring, there is a lot of pruning work. It's a varied job, although you do have to be a bit of a loner. Of course, you also have contact with colleagues from the workshop, or with the gauge manager. There's time for a chat or a joke. But in my job, you have to enjoy doing your own thing.
Space for privacy
The water board works with high-quality machinery. That's important to me. Here, you can work with high-quality equipment. We also take good care of it; it just has to look good.
We also work with a clear schedule, which is very pleasant. Before this, I worked for a contracting company in arable farming. I worked long hours there. Now that I've just become a father, I'm glad I chose to work for the water board. I like being with my family and having fixed working hours. The government offers more flexibility for your private life.
Is my son already interested in water? He just got a water slide with little locks. He's still very young, but I generally believe that people should be water conscious. As water managers, we try to ensure that we don't have too much water anywhere, nor too little. But ultimately, you have to make do with the water that's available.
