Working Together to Create a Safe and Nature-Friendly Meerweg

We are working with the Province of Groningen, the council , and Natuurmonumenten (Dutch Society for Nature Conservation) make the Meerweg wildlife-friendly. We also want to protect the flood embankment this road from beaver digging.

Protecting the flood embankment beavers

As part of this project, water authority is responsible for installing beaver netting in the flood embankment. This measure protects the flood embankment damage caused by beavers digging, and ensures a safe and strong flood defence.

Safe Crossing for Animals

The Province of Groningen is also installing a wildlife crossing to allow animals to cross safely and prevent traffic accidents involving wildlife. Implementation of this component is currently scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
