Update: Water levels in De Dijken-Bakkerom water storage facility back to normal

The De Dijken-Bakkerom flood storage facility near Boerakker was activated on February 21 following heavy rainfall. Water levels in the flood storage facility have now returned to normal.

Cleaning up the water storage facility

Now that most of the water has been drained from the water storage area, it is time for aftercare. The water also brought debris, silt, and rampant aquatic plants into the water storage area. We will clean up the debris. We will tackle the rampant aquatic plants and silt in consultation with the Dutch Forestry Commission.

Efforts discussed afterwards

The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority, together with the province of Groningen, Prolander, Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission), and the municipality of Westerkwartier, has reviewed the use of the water storage facility. The purpose of this evaluation is to learn lessons for the next time that this or another water storage facility needs to be used.

Dikes and quays in good condition

All the precipitation saturated the ground. This also affected the dikes and quays along waterways in the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier. The water board has since inspected the dikes and quays for damage caused by erosion and possible subsidence. The inspection revealed that the dikes and quays are in good condition.
