Will you join us in making a change? Keeping basements and crawl spaces dry
No one wants wet basements or crawl spaces. Especially not when moisture creeps up through the walls. This can even lead to health problems. Here are a few simple tips.
What can you do yourself?
- Check drainage: do you have a drainage system under your home? Drainage pipes must be flushed regularly, otherwise they will become clogged.
- Groundwater flooding: if you are unable to resolve the issue yourself, please contact your local municipality. They can work with you to assess the groundwater level and explore possible solutions.
- To pump or not to pump? If you live in an area with a high groundwater level and your basement/crawl space is not waterproof, pumping is pointless. In any case, ensure good ventilation in your home.
- Ventilation: always ensure adequate ventilation. A crawl space requires at least two ventilation grilles with a connection to the outside. The grilles are located opposite each other so that moisture can be removed.
- Filling with shells: in some cases, the crawl space in a house is too deep; 60 cm is sufficient. You can partially fill a crawl space that is too deep with shells, for example.
- Waterproofing: As a homeowner, you are responsible for ensuring that your basement is waterproof. There are several techniques for doing this. Contact a contractor or specialist in your area.
