No dogs allowed on the dike

Dogs have been banned from the dike along the Wadden Sea for a long time. Dogs cause a lot of damage by digging, which weakens the top layer of the dike. Violators risk a fine of €110.

Leave sheep alone

Stray dogs often chase sheep grazing on the dike, causing distress to sheep and lambs. From mid-March to mid-November, there are many sheep on the dike. These sheep are important because they ensure strong grass cover.

Holes in the dike

Every year, dogs dig many holes in the sea dike. These holes compromise the safety of the dike. The water board fills the holes as quickly as possible. After repair, these areas often remain weak spots in the grass for a long time. As a result, the top layer can be washed away more quickly during storms and high water. The holes pose a danger to other walkers and also to water board employees when they carry out maintenance on the dike with tractors.

After a warning comes a fine

The water board has issued many warnings so far. That is not helping enough. The water board's enforcement officers are authorized to issue fines for violations. Violators risk a fine of €110 per violation (excluding administration and processing costs).

One exception: where are you allowed to take your dog on the dike?

Only in Delfzijl, between the Eemshotel and the Kustweg near the Hoogwatum service flat, are dogs allowed on the dike all year round, provided they are kept on a leash.
