Rising water levels - update

On Monday, June 10, our region received a significant amount of rain region the day. Between 30 and 60 mm of rain fell. This led to rising water levels. Water levels are still high, but have since begun to drop slightly.

Drainage

We are working hard to drain the excess water from our area. This will take some time. The De Waterwolf and HD Louwes pumping stations are operating at full capacity, as are our polder pumping stations. At Delfzijl, pumping station Drie Delfzijlen pumping station is draining the water. Because this pumping station renovated and electrified, one pump is temporarily out of service. The other pump cannot handle this amount of water on its own. As a result, the emergency plan has been activated. Two pumps have been installed at Brons lock/Slim lock in Garmerwolde to pump the excess water from the Damsterdiep to the Eemskanaal. The cycle path along the Eems canal has been temporarily closed as a result. Emergency drainage has also been installed in other places, mainly to drain the excess water in the Fivelingo catchwater (east side of our region).

Forecast

We expect up to five millimetre over the next 24 hours. The forecast for the next five days calls for up to 20 millimetre rain. Water levels are expected to drop sufficiently, allowing our water system to handle these amounts of precipitation effectively.
