Celebrate the new dyke with us from the harbour in Lauwersoog!

The dyke reinforcement is nearly complete. For four years, we have worked on the dyke, and large sections were closed off. Now, the 9-kilometres-long dyke has been reinforced with additional features for nature, recreation, and traffic. To celebrate this special moment, we’re hosting a festive afternoon on the dyke on 26 September. Celebrate the new dyke with us from the harbour in Lauwersoog! During a fun-filled afternoon of activities, nature, and socialising, you can explore the new Lauwersmeer dyke.

Discover the new Lauwersmeer dyke

Start the afternoon with a cup of coffee and a game on the dyke. Then hop on your bike and explore the route over the dyke. Along the way, you’ll come across various activities: enjoy a delicious ice cream, be surprised by street theatre on the new pedestrian promenade of the harbour, participate in the “Interwoven Future of Lauwersmeer” artwork under the guidance of artist Trudy Oosterhuis, take a photo with the new dyke at the R.J. Clevering locks, and ask all your questions to our dyke workers who have worked on the dyke.

Programme Saturday 26 September

  • 14:15 – Official opening of the second access road
    Together with the Het Hogeland Council, we will open the new access road to harbour.
  • 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Bike tour along the Lauwersmeer ( dyke )
    Ride at your own pace along the route, passing various spots on and around the Lauwersmeerdijk. Bring your own bike.
  • 16:00 – Drinks and music at the tidal culvert
    We’ll wrap up the afternoon in festive style with some snacks, drinks, and live music from the St. Caecilia Kloosterburen Music Association. Together, we’ll raise a toast to the new dyke!

Location

Registration is not required. Come to the dyke on the east side of the harbour (near the small beach) on Saturday afternoon between 14:00 and 17:00. Or come to the tidal culvert at 16:00. We look forward to seeing you there!

Cycling route over the dyke

The cycling route passes all the highlights of the dyke reinforcement project: the western harbour breakwater, the promenade along Lauwersoog harbour, the small beach on the east side of harbour, the lookout point overlooking the rural dyke, and the tidal culvert. We’ll post a map of the cycling route on this website later.

Practical information

You can start the bike route at any time and cycle on your own. Bring your own bike. Can’t or don’t want to bike? You can also walk or explore the route by car. For visitors with limited mobility, there are a few spots available in a golf cart. Coming by car? You can park in lot P4.

Dyke reinforcement Lauwersmeer dyke-Vierhuizergat

The Lauwersmeer dyke in Groningen lies between Lauwersoog and the Westpolder. We are currently reinforcing this dyke. This will protect us from future flooding from the sea. After a period of preparation and joint planning, we began the work in 2023. The dyke reinforcement will continue to the end of September 2026.
