Preferred alternative for expansion of De Onlanden balancing lake adopted
Additional space is balancing lake for balancing lake in De Onlanden. This will allow us to continue to ensure the safety of our residents during periods of extreme rainfall. We aim to prevent flooding in the region and, where possible, promote nature conservation. On November 7, Provincial Executive Drenthe decided which version of the De Onlanden Optimization Plan should be developed. This brings us one step further in the process.
The ‘Hooiweg variant’ is the best choice
Three options were on the table. Over the past few months, we've been looking at which of the three options best supports the area's two main functions: water safety and nature. We've decided on the "Hooiweg option." We call this our preferred alternative. It was developed in collaboration with local partners and with input from the community. We're now working on the details of this plan.
The measures
The ‘Hooiweg variant’ is not only good for water safety, it also leaves an important part of the nature reserve undisturbed and contributes to achieving certain nature conservation goals in this area.
- Refuge mounds will be created for certain animal species, and the marshland will be enhanced by means of turfing and widening ditches, which is beneficial for bird species such as the bittern.
- The embankments around the area will be raised, but there will be no embankment at lake Leekstermeer, because the area between Hooiweg and lake Leekstermeer will not be included in the expansion of the balancing lake. This will ensure that the tranquility of this nature reserve is not disturbed.
