Preferred alternative for additional water storage at De Onlanden finalized

Additional space for water storage is needed in De Onlanden. This will enable us to continue to provide sufficient safety for the residents of our area in the event of extreme rainfall. We want to prevent flooding in the region and promote nature wherever possible. On November 7, the Provincial Executive of Drenthe decided which version of the De Onlanden Optimization Plan can be developed. This brings us another step further in the process.

The ‘Hooiweg variant’ is the best choice

Three options were on the table. Over the past few months, we've been looking at which of the three options best supports the area's two main functions: water safety and nature. We've decided on the "Hooiweg option." We call this our preferred alternative. It was developed in collaboration with local partners and with input from the community. We're now working on the details of this plan.

The measures

The ‘Hooiweg variant’ is not only good for water safety, it also leaves an important part of the nature reserve undisturbed and contributes to achieving certain nature conservation goals in this area.

  • Refuge islands will be created for certain animal species, and the marshland will be enhanced by means of plowing and widening ditches, which is beneficial for bird species such as the bittern.
  • The quays around the area will be raised, but there will be no quay at Leekstermeer, because the area between Hooiweg and Leekstermeer will not be included in the additional water storage. This will ensure that the tranquility of this nature reserve is not disturbed.
