What a year: this was 2025

Never before has so much work on water been in progress and in preparation.

Check out our look back at 2025

2025 saw a drier spring and a wetter autumn than average. Sometimes that means retaining water for longer and sometimes draining excess water to keep our feet dry. Finding the right balance for sufficient water in every season: that's our job!

This year, our work also focused on:

• Temporarily storing excess precipitation to prevent disasters: we began our next chapter in De Onlanden.
• Working on cleaner and healthier water, for example, with a major project completed in lake Paterswoldsemeer.
• Modernising our treatment plants in Garmerwolde and Gaarkeuken to return wastewater to surface water in a safer and cleaner manner.
•    Continuing to work tirelessly on waterproofing the future with the almost completed reinforced Lauwersmeer dyke and at Nieuwe Waterwerken (hydraulic-engineering works) in Zoutkamp.
• Controlling high tides at sea by occasionally closing the dyke passages in Delfzijl.
• Supporting ecology with artificial reefs along the Wadden Sea coast and a dyke passage at Marnewaard.
•    Taking steps towards a balanced transition between freshwater and saltwater in lake Lauwersmeer.

Work on water also includes: dredging, repairing embankment walls, restoring heritage, mowing, controlling exotic species, and detecting sources of pollution in our surface water.

Thank you!

Thank you for your cooperation in 2025! Our New Year's resolution? We will continue to lead the way in working together on water and soil. With many of you.

We wish you happy holidays and all the best for 2026! With an important voice for water and soil.
