What you can do for cleaner water
Every day, we flush things down the drain that don't belong there. With a few simple choices, you can help keep the water cleaner. Read below to find out what you can do and why it's important.
What can you do to help ensure cleaner water?
- Medicines? Return them to the pharmacy.
Never flush them down the toilet or sink. - Fat? Let it cool down and throw it in the trash.
Fat in the sink causes blockages and pollutes the water. - Paint, turpentine, or oil? Take it to the recycling center.
Chemical waste does not belong in the sewer. - Use cleaning products in moderation.
Choose environmentally friendly products and do not use more than necessary. - Do not flush wipes, sanitary pads, or cat litter down the toilet.
This causes blockages and should be disposed of in the trash. - Do not throw cigarette butts in the toilet.
They contain harmful substances that are difficult to remove.

Why is this important?
What you flush down the drain eventually ends up in our sewage treatment plants. Think of medicine residues, cleaning products, grease, or wipes. These substances are difficult to remove and can cause damage to nature, aquatic life, and our health.
By being mindful of what you flush down the drain, you help keep the water cleaner. This is important because:
- Better water quality means less pollution in drinking water sources.
- Fewer harmful substances make the purification process more sustainable and energy efficient.
- Cleaner rivers and ditches ensure healthier plants and animals.
