What do you see when you look at water?
Water is everywhere. In the ditch behind your house, the “ dyke ” you cycle across, the mudflats, your favorite walking spot, or even in the puddle left behind after a heavy downpour. We often don’t give it a second thought—until there’s too much water. Or, conversely, too little. That’s why we’re looking for residents who want to participate in the “Water Portrait of the Netherlands”—a unique photography project in which people from all over the Netherlands show the role water plays in their lives.
Your Perspective on Water
Everyone experiences water differently. Perhaps you enjoy the tranquility along the Reitdiep. Maybe you see the effects of drought on nature. Perhaps you’re concerned about flooding on your street. Or maybe you realize how important clean water is for people and animals.
For the "Water Portrait of the Netherlands," capture your personal perspective on water in photographs. Not perfect pictures, but real stories from the areas where you live, work, or spend your free time.
You don't have to be an experienced photographer. A cell phone is all you need.

Five days, five assignments

After a group kickoff meeting, you'll get started on five photography assignments. Each day, you'll complete one photography assignment based on a water-related theme.
The assignments cover topics such as:
- water safety;
- drought;
- flooding;
- water quality;
- a regional water issue.
During the kick-off, you'll take part in a photography workshop and learn how to tell a story through images.
Share your story
Together, the photos and stories from all participants form the “Water Portrait of the Netherlands.” A selection of these will be featured in a traveling exhibition that will tour the Netherlands.
In addition, photos and stories can be shared via social media and regional media.
As a participant, you will receive:
- a photography workshop;
- a spot for your photos and story in a traveling exhibition;
- a €50 VVV gift certificate;
- a travel allowance of up to €50.
Water affects us all
"The Water Portrait of the Netherlands" highlights how important water is in our daily lives—not only today, but also for the future.
That is why this project is part of the national campaign “Water. The Netherlands Cares About It,” leading up to the water board elections in March 2027. With your vote, you’ll help determine who will serve on the new board of the water authority .Theboard makes decisions on issues that affect us all, such as flood protection, clean water, and sufficient water supplies during times of drought.
