De Dijken-Bakkerom water storage facility deployed after heavy rainfall
There has been a lot of rainfall in recent days. This has led to local flooding. In our area, this is particularly the case in the municipality of Westerkwartier.
De Dijken – Bakkerom water storage area deployed for the first time
The water board ensures that we can live safely with water. That is why we have decided to activate the De Dijken – Bakkerom water storage facility. This will lower the water level locally by approximately 10 centimeters. For the entire reservoir, the use of the storage facility will result in a reduction of approximately 4 centimeters. We will do this from 3 p.m. this afternoon. The water from the surrounding area can then flow into this area. It will remain here for a maximum of a few days before being discharged into the sea. We will be able to discharge excess water into the sea tomorrow morning. We can do this again tomorrow evening. We expect the water level in the reservoir to slowly drop to normal levels after Tuesday. This is the first time we will be using the De Dijken – Bakkerom water storage area. It was ready for use at the end of 2021.
Water collection in De Onlanden too
There is also excess water locally in the northern part of Drenthe. This water flows to De Onlanden, where it is collected. De Onlanden has been used as a water storage facility for some time.
Who does what in the event of flooding?
The water board is committed to complying with the established water level decision, which allows us to prevent flooding as much as possible. In order to be able to control the water level effectively in all circumstances, it is important that there is sufficient space for water. Water storage facilities contribute to this.
The municipality has a legal duty of care for groundwater management in public spaces (built-up areas). It is also responsible for the drainage of rainwater and wastewater via the sewer system. The municipality is the first point of contact if flooding occurs here.
