Noorderzijlvest Water Authority Strengthened Cooperation with Peru Thanks to a European Grant
Noorderzijlvest Water Authority will continue and expand its collaboration with Peruvian water organizations. A new international project, Sustainable WOP Peru, has received financial support from the European Union. This will enable Dutch and Peruvian partners to work together from 2026 through 2030 to improve wastewater treatment, advance knowledge, and develop climate-resilient water services.
In recent years, Noorderzijlvest Water Authority and various partners in Peru have been collaborating on water management and water treatment. This collaboration has led to a valuable exchange of knowledge, mutual learning, and strong relationships among the organizations involved. At the same time, the challenges related to clean, safe, and sustainable water remain significant. That is why international cooperation remains important.
The new project proposal was submitted as part of the EU Water Operators’ Partnerships (EU-WOP) programme , a European initiative that promotes cooperation among water and wastewater organizations worldwide. The proposal has since been approved, paving the way for continued cooperation between the Netherlands and Peru.
Sustainable WOP Peru
Sustainable WOP Peru runs from 2026 through 2030, is funded by the European Union, and is implemented by UN-Habitat. Fifteen collaborative projects were selected worldwide as part of this funding round. Sustainable WOP Peru is one of them.
The project focuses on the further development of two Peruvian wastewater treatment plants:
- EPS Grau in the Piura region;
- Agua Tumbes in the Tumbes region.
Through knowledge sharing and collaboration, the organizations are working to improve services, create a healthy living environment, and build greater resilience to the effects of climate change. They are also focusing on providing sustainable and accessible sanitation facilities for residents in the project area.
Knowledge Sharing as a Foundation
Knowledge sharing is at the heart of the project. Experts from Dutch water authorities share their knowledge through field visits, training sessions, and practical support. Some of these experts are already involved in Blue Deal Peru. In addition, new experts are brought in as needed.
Noorderzijlvest Water Authority serves as the project coordinator. In this role, the water authority collaborates with other Dutch water authorities participating in Blue Deal, TU Delft, OTASS Peru, and the Peruvian Embassy in The Hague.
Working Together Toward Sustainable Water Management
Through Sustainable WOP Peru, the partners aim to improve the quality of wastewater treatment, strengthen knowledge and expertise, and contribute to a healthy living environment. In addition, the project helps build stronger, more organized water services that are better prepared for the impacts of climate change. It also further deepens cooperation between Dutch and Peruvian water organizations.
