Water level appears to have peaked; Dijken-Bakkerom balancing lake is full

In the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority region we Noorderzijlvest Water Authority still Noorderzijlvest Water Authority hard today to combat high water levels.

Water will remain in the De Dykes Bakkerom storage facility for the time being

Yesterday, the Dykes Bakkerom balancing lake was put into operation for the first time. This was necessary to lower water levels in the Dwarsdiep. As water from the surrounding area flowed into the reservoir, the local water level was centimetre by more than 10 centimetre . The reservoir has now been successfully filled with approximately 1 million cubic meters of water. The water will remain here for a while until more space becomes available in the water system to discharge the large volume of water toward the sea. This is expected to happen early next week.

The floodgates are being lowered again

The high water level in the Dwarsdiep has been lowered with the use of the balancing lake. To allow water from this area to flow into this storage facility, the brand-new compartmentalization weirs in the Hoendiep and the Lettelberterberg catchwater were raised yesterday. Because the storage facility is full, the weirs were lowered again weirs.

Collecting and draining water from the northern part of Drenthe

The rise in water levels has leveled off across most of our region. This means that the peak in water levels appears to have passed. We are still dealing with water being discharged from the northern part of Drenthe. There is also a significant amount of excess water there, which is flowing into the balancing lake De Onlanden. From there, this excess water is also being discharged toward Lauwersmeer.

Discharge into the sea

Water was discharged into the sea this morning, and we’ll be doing it again tonight. There will be few opportunities to discharge water into the sea in the coming days. This means that the discharge into the sea will proceed gradually. Next Saturday morning—after today—is the next opportunity to discharge water into the sea. It may take about another week and a half before the water level in the catchwater to its target level.

Handling reports

The water authority since responded to several reports from the area. We are working to clear blockages, repair damage to infrastructure, and have emergency pumps running at a few locations. The water authority flood embankments. We will do so again when the water recedes. We remain vigilant regarding weather conditions.
