Water level appears to have peaked; Dijken-Bakkerom water storage facility is full

In the working area of the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority, we are also working hard today to combat high water levels.

Water remains in storage for a while longer De Dijken – Bakkerom

Yesterday, the De Dijken – Bakkerom water storage facility was used for the first time. This was necessary to lower the water levels in the Dwarsdiep. As water from the surrounding area flowed into the storage facility, the local water level was lowered by more than 10 centimeters. The storage facility has now been successfully filled with around 1 million cubic meters of water. The water will remain here for a while until there is more space in the water system to discharge the large amount of water into the sea. This is expected to happen early next week.

Compartmentalization dams are being lowered again

The high water level in the Dwarsdiep has been lowered with the use of water storage facilities. In order to allow water from this area to flow into these storage facilities, the brand-new compartmentalization weirs in the Hoendiep and the Lettelberterbergboezem were raised yesterday. Because the storage facilities are full, the weirs have been lowered again today.

Mountains and drainage of water from the northern part of Drenthe

The rise in water levels has stagnated in most of our working area. This means that the peak in water levels appears to be behind us. We are still dealing with water discharge from the northern part of Drenthe. Here too, there is a lot of excess water flowing to the water storage facility in De Onlanden. This excess water is also discharged from there to Lauwersmeer.

Discharge into the sea

This morning, water was discharged into the sea, and we will do so again this evening. There will be few opportunities to discharge water into the sea in the coming days. This means that the discharge into the sea will be gradual. Next Saturday morning is the next opportunity to discharge water into the sea after today. It may take about a week and a half before the water level in the reservoir is back to the target level.

Handling notifications

The water board has now responded to several reports from the area. We are working to clear blockages, repair damage to structures, and have emergency pumps running in a few places. The water board is inspecting quays. We will do this again at low tide. We remain alert to the weather conditions.
