Another new water expedition!

Experience the value of water on a journey of discovery through the water treatment of the future. On Wednesday evening, 15 October, Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is hosting the third water expedition, a fascinating journey of discovery through the water treatment of the future. We look forward to welcoming you in Winsum this time. Doors open at 19:15. At 19:30, a visual tour will begin, allowing you to literally step into the world of water.

Why a water expedition?

Every day, we use millions of litres of water. But where does it actually go when we flush the toilet or brush our teeth? That water eventually returns to our surface water, and cleaning it is no easy task. The wastewater treatment plant in Winsum is one of the places where this important work takes place. To mark the occasion, the third exhibition for residents and the local community starts there. Come along and experience how essential sufficient and clean water is!

Water is, in fact, a scarce resource: only 0.25% of all the water on Earth is available as freshwater for daily use. Every day, Noorderzijlvest Water Authority works from 13 sites to provide clean, healthy, and treated water for approximately 500,000 residents in the northern Netherlands. Yet harmful substances still end up in our water, posing risks to the environment and public health. That is why using water responsibly is essential. Together with councils, drinking water companies, and knowledge partners, we are seeking smart and sustainable solutions. Part of the solution lies with all of us—in our behaviour and our choices. What we don’t flush down the drain, we don’t have to remove.

The programme

We’ll start with a visual tour that highlights the value of water. Discover exactly what happens at the treatment plant, how wastewater is treated, and what raw materials are extracted from it. And what does Noorderzijlvest Water Authority do with the medication residues removed from the wastewater? You might have questions of your own during the water exhibition, or you might simply enjoy learning more about this fascinating topic.

After that, Noorderzijlvest Water Authority employees will be available to talk with you. Did you know, for example, that wastewater is often viewed as pollution, but also contains valuable substances that can be reused? And that water knows no boundaries? Collaboration is crucial for an efficient water cycle. Learn about the many partners involved and discover what the future of water looks like.
