Zoutkamp Celebrates Completion of the Nieuwe Waterwerken (new hydraulic-engineering works) on 12 and 13 June

On the weekend of 12 and 13 June, the Groningen provincial executive, Het Hogeland council, the water authority, and the residents of Zoutkamp and the surrounding area will celebrate the completion of various projects related to water management, recreation, and traffic safety in Zoutkamp under the name Nieuwe Waterwerken Zoutkamp (Zoutkamp hydraulic-engineering works).

Enchanting open-air concert by Marlene Bakker and the Noordpool orchestra

On Friday evening 12 June, the village will be symbolically returned to the residents of Zoutkamp with an enchanting open-air concert by Marlene Bakker and the Noordpoolorkest. This open-air concert, titled Marlene // Meldine, is inspired by unique Low Saxon folk tales. The focus is on the 19th-century seer Meldine from Zoutkamp. According to tradition, she possessed the “second sight” and saw visions of the future.

The concert is from 20:15 (doors open at 19:30) to 22:00. Location: behind the dyke on the small beach at Hunsingoweg in Zoutkamp. Admission is free.

Waterwerken (hydraulic-engineering works) Open Day

On Saturday 13 June, everyone is welcome behind the dyke between 11:00 and 16:00 to see the Nieuwe Waterwerken during the Open Day! You can view the site from the water and the shore.

  • Hop aboard one of the boats to see the work that has been done on flood embankments, bridges, locks, and the pumping station from the water. Let yourself be carried along from the harbour of Zoutkamp through the Reitdiep lock and back ashore via the Hunsingo lock.
  • Behind the dyke, in and around the new pumping station, there is plenty to see and do related to the Nieuwe Waterwerken for people of all ages.
  • Take a look inside the new Hunsingo pumping station and be inspired by the story behind water management and how we in Zoutkamp—as a province, council, water authority, and contractors—have worked together with the village to get the project off the ground.
  • There are also various activities for younger visitors (including a bouncy castle and face painting)!
  • Enjoy a wonderful day with live music, along with some snacks and/or drinks!
  • Free admission
