In the Kop van Drenthe, the area stretching from Fochteloërveen to De Onlanden, various partners are working together to make the rural area climate-proof. Due to climate change, we are increasingly faced with heavy, prolonged rainfall and periods of drought in the area. This causes problems, but also offers opportunities for agriculture and nature development.

Attractive and resilient landscape

We are working towards a new vision for the development of the Kop van Drenthe region, in which the use and development of the landscape will be attractive, recognisable, and resilient for decades to come.

Water system plays a central role

The new plan aims to ensure that enough water is available during dry periods, that flooding and potential water damage caused by heavy rainfall are minimised as much as possible, and that the water quality in the area is maintained.

Collaboration

We are working with other parties to tackle the challenges in the area. We can only find solutions by working together. This approach requires new forms of cooperation; it is a process of change, including in terms of organisation and management. Noorderzijlvest wants to take a leading role, because we see water as the interwoven foundation for all functions in the area.

Area approach

We improve the water management of nature reserves and strengthen biodiversity in rural areas. With an area-specific approach, we examine how the challenges of nature, agriculture, climate, and water can reinforce each other. This reveals bottlenecks, opportunities for collaboration, and possible solutions, enabling us to lay the foundations for a balanced and widely supported approach.

Partners

Within the regional approach for the Kop van Drenthe, the Noorderzijvest Water Authority is working together with the Province of Drenthe, the councils of Noordenveld and Tynaarlo, water companies, Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission), Natuurmonumenten (the Dutch Society for Nature Conservation), Het Drents Landschap (the Drenthe Landscape Foundation), LTO (the Dutch Agricultural and Horticultural Organisation), and DAJK (the Association for Young Farmers in Drenthe). The implementing organisation Prolander is working on the various tasks on behalf of the Province of Drenthe.
