Restoration of stream system

The Runsloot and Stroetenloop are both important to water management in the Kop van Drenthe region. The Runsloot is part of the Eelderdiep stream system, while the Stroetenloop is part of the Grote Masloot. Due to interventions such as peat extraction, the straightening of streams, and water supply from the Noord-Willems canal, the system no longer functions naturally. This leads to problems in the water system:

Restoration and reinforcement of the water system

To tackle the problems in the Runsloot and Stroetenloop water systems, the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is implementing measures aimed at restoring and strengthening the water system.

Problems

Problems in the water system:

  • Water drains too quickly during wet periods.
  • In summer, there is actually a water shortage.
  • The ecological quality does not comply with the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
  • There is a risk of the upper courses drying up.

Measures

The measures focus on:

  • Developing a natural and self-regulating stream valley and stream system
  • Increasing the sponge effect so ensure better water retention in the area
  • Improve water quality by creating a more permanent flow and increase biodiversity of plants, aquatic animals, and fish.

European Water Framework Directive (WFD)

In Europe, agreements have been reached about clean and healthy water. These agreements are set out in the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The aim is to improve the quality of streams, ditches, and other waterways.

For the Eelderdiep water system, this means that we will make the course of the Runsloot and Stroetenloop more natural. We will ensure that fish can live better in the lower courses of these rivers. This will create a healthier living environment for plants and animals. These measures will also help to prevent the area from drying out.

Vissen voor Verbinding (Fish for Connection)

Groningen is one of the few provinces where streams flow into the sea. Waters such as the Reitdiep with all its upper courses (Peizerdiep, Eelderdiep, Dwarsdiep) are crucial to migratory fish such as sea trout, eel, ide, and stickleback—which in turn are an important food source for Wadden Sea birds.

So, along the entire route, from the Wadden Sea and lake Lauwersmeer to the upper  courses of the streams, measures are being taken to ensure ecological recovery. This also applies to the Runsloot and Stroetenloop.
The aim of the project Vissen voor Verbinding (Fish for Connection)  is to create a better connection, allowing migratory fish to travel between the sea and the inland waters.

Kop van Drenthe

This project is part of the Kop van Drenthe regional approach. Various organisations are working together in this area, which stretches from Fochteloërveen to De Onlanden. Together, we are making the landscape more resilient to climate change. More information Kop van Drenthe

The water authority ensures good water distribution, more plants and animals, cleaner water, and a landscape that is better able to withstand drought and heavy rainfall. This is how we are making the area stronger for the future.
